LoRa gateway locates at the core of LoRa star network, and it is the information bridge between terminal and server, a multi-channel transceiver. Sometimes, LoRa gateway is referred to LoRa base station or LoRa concentrator. Although the definitions are different, they actually are the same. LoRa gateway uses different spreading factors. Different spreading factors are orthogonal to each other. Theoretically it is possible to demodulate signals of different spreading factors in the same channel. The gateway and the server are connected by standard IP, and the terminal communicates with one or more gateways through single hop. All terminal communication is bidirectional, and also supports software remote upgrade.
Currently, the gateway type is different according to different definition. For example, it can be divided into indoor gateway and outdoor gateway for different application scenarios; full-duplex gateway and half-duplex gateway for different communication methods; LoRaWAN protocol gateway and not compatible LoRaWAN protocol gateway for different design standard. How many terminals can a single gateway connect to? Gateway capacity refers to the ability of gateway to receive the number of packets within a certain period. In theory, a single SX1301 chip has 8 channels and can receive up to 15 million packets per day in full compliance with the LoRaWAN protocol. If an application’ sending packet rate is 1 packet/hour, single SX1301 chip can access 62,500 terminal nodes. Certainly, this is only a theoretical value. The number of gateway access terminals is ultimately related to the number of gateway channels, the frequency of terminal transmission, the number of bytes sent, and the spreading factor.
